What Is Smart Glass?

Smart glass sounds like a futuristic upgrade, but it’s a proven, practical technology that’s become one of the most requested upgrades among our design-forward clients. Here’s what it actually is and where it makes sense in a home.

The Basic Idea

Smart glass, also called switchable or electrochromic glass, can change from clear to opaque (or tinted) on demand — either at the flip of a switch, a tap on an app, or automatically in response to light. Instead of relying on blinds, curtains, or films, the glass itself does the work.

How It Works

Most smart glass uses a thin electrochromic or liquid-crystal layer laminated between panes of glass. Applying a small electric current rearranges the particles in that layer, shifting the glass between transparent and translucent or opaque states in seconds.

Where It Shines

Smart glass is a favorite for primary suites and bathrooms, where privacy needs change throughout the day. It’s equally popular in home offices and media rooms, where instant glare control means no more fighting with blinds during a video call or movie. Because there’s no visible hardware, it also keeps sightlines and window trim clean — a detail that matters in the kind of high-end builds we specialize in.

What to Expect

Smart glass carries a higher cost than standard privacy solutions, and it requires a small electrical connection at installation. In exchange, you get a permanent, hardware-free way to control privacy and light that standard blinds or films simply can’t match.

Curious whether smart glass is a fit for your project? We install it as part of custom window and door packages and can show you a live demo of how it performs.
